Making Home Work...
When You Can’t Leave It
For most of us, leaving home is something we barely think about. But for one Every client, home has temporarily become his entire world.
After a recent foot amputation due to diabetes, he is recovering in his third-floor apartment while waiting for his wound to heal so that he can be fitted with and begin using an artificial leg. He has battled several infections, so recovery has taken longer than anticipated. Home care does come three times a week to help with bandages, but with stairs standing between him and the outside world, having a home that is comfortable, functional, and easy to navigate has become more important than ever.
That’s where Everly came in.
Over time, like in so many of our homes, belongings had accumulated. Things that once had a purpose were taking up valuable space, and everyday areas had become harder to use—especially while navigating the apartment with limited mobility.
Everly worked alongside him to straighten and organize the apartment, focusing on making the space more accessible and useful during his recovery. We helped identify items he was ready to let go of and coordinated donations so those belongings could find a new home rather than continuing to take up space in his.
The result wasn’t about creating a picture-perfect apartment. It was about creating room to live. Clearer pathways, more usable spaces, and fewer unnecessary belongings can make a meaningful difference when someone’s mobility suddenly changes. Just as importantly, the process allowed our client to make decisions about his own belongings and how he wanted his home to function.
At Everly, we believe a home should support you through every stage of life—including the unexpected ones.
Sometimes that means downsizing. Sometimes it means reorganizing. And sometimes it simply means helping someone reclaim enough space to move through their home safely while they heal.
For this client, a more accessible apartment means a little more independence while he prepares for thenext chapter: using his artificial leg and getting back out into the world.
